If you happen to be fond of the clothing surrounding the area give a heads up to the artist so that they can arrange a bib or towel to keep ink from staining your clothes.
During your appointment
What to expect when you are in the shop
It’s the day of and you’ve done all your preparations and are ready now to get tattooed. Here’s what an ideal day of tattooing might look like:
You get to the tattoo shop no earlier than 15 minutes allowing Anita to complete final preparations (sanitizing and setting up the station, preparing the stencil, getting a quick food/drink/washroom break before the appointment).
Once you are through the door you will fill out an electronic waiver that:
Confirms your healthy and not exhibiting COVID symptoms
Of age to be tattooed
Consent to being tattooed
Consent to having your tattoo photographed and posted online
With the e-waiver signed Anita will start placing and stenciling the design on your skin which might require:
Shaving down the area for hair & baby hairs
Sanitizing the skin with alcohol
Applying Stencil Stuff to create an adherent
Applying the stencil to the skin with the Stencil Stuff
A photo/video opportunity
During this period it is completely okay to ask your artist to move the stencil around - no tattooing will begin until the client is in agreement of the placement.
After the stencil is applied and given an opportunity to dry (roughly 5+ min) the tattooing will begin in earnest!
As each client is different the tattooing schedule may look different for each individual but some things to note are:
You can stop at any time.
Pain is not stigmatized at this shop. Everybody reacts differently. Some days sessions might be easier, some days it might be harder. There are many variables that might affect your pain tolerance for the day (sleep, hunger, thirst, stress, underlying conditions, hormonal shifts etc). It is perfectly acceptable to ask to finish a session on another date if you have hit your limit for the day.
You can take breaks
Whether you need to hydrate, stretch, take a smoke break, etc please feel free to ask. As long as you are mindful of the length of your appointment you can take as many breaks as you need.
You can ask questions
A session can feel to go by pretty fast and a lot of information delivered during that period of time. If at any point you want something repeated or have a question about how something is done don’t hesitate to ask.
Once application is done your session will be ended with a few photos/videos and application and rundown of aftercare (either second skin or an absorbent bandage.
After your appointment
What to expect once your appointment is done and beyond
Now that your appointment is complete you will be receiving a series of emails and checkins to facilitate your healing journey which include:
An email after your appointment going through aftercare instructions
An email a month after checking in on healing progress, to potentially grab a healed photo and potentially book a touch up appointment if required.
All tattoos are covered for a free touchup within a year of application of the tattoo.
Following your touchup appointment, should you have one, another email will be sent out approximately a month after to check in on full healing.
Regardless of length of time from your appointment questions are always welcome through messaging or emails.
Aftercare
How to take care of your tattoo
Second Skin
After your appointment you should have an applied piece of Second Skin and an additional piece to apply partway through the healing process. If at any point your bandage gets red around the edge of the Second Skin it may be an allergic reaction and you should remove it immediately and skip to the Dry Heal stage.
During the initial stages:
Remove your Second Skin
After 1-2 days while in the shower remove the cover allowing the steam to loosen it. Remove it by pulling from the bottom following the hair growth like 3M contact tape. The centre will loosen and an air pocket will form - gently pull until the entire piece releases.
Gently wash the tattoo
With unscented paraben-free soap and water clean the entire area. Drug store brands like Aveeno, Cetaphile, etc are preferable.
Dry the area
Using a paper towel or lint free towel pat the area down and allow it to air dry fully. The area must be completely moisture free for the Second Skin to adhere properly.
Apply the second piece of Second Skin
Remove the white backing first to reveal the tacky part. Apply the tacky side over the tattoo with a clearance of 1” in all directions. Press it along the centre line and with the side of your palm sweep outward in both directions until the tacky side is fully attached to the skin. Afterwards removed the stiff plastic backing by releasing an edge and sweeping it flat and downwards like a vinyl application.
Remove this piece 5-7 days after application.
Dry Heal
During the Dry Heal you you will be repeating these steps for 2-3 weeks until the area is fully healed. This may take longer or shorter depending on your immune system health.
Wash and dry tattoo area
Follow the same instructions as step 2-3 in the Second Skin section.
Apply lotion
Apply a thin layer of unscented paraben-free lotion. Drug store brands like Aveeno, Cetaphile, etc are preferable. Avoid covering the are with wrapping and clothing that will cause abrasiveness.
Things to avoid
While healing treat your tattooed area like an open wound - during the following days try to keep yourself rested, hydrated and avoid excessive activities. Additional things to avoid are:
Excessive amounts of ointment - you’ll want it to be dry to touch once it is applied
Picking, scratching, peeling, slapping, rubbing or irritating your tattoo.
Soak your tattoo within the first 2 weeks. This includes swimming, soaking, hot tubs, open bodies of water, etc.
Exposing your tattoo to sun for at the first 3 weeks - after which use sunblock and avoid direct exposure.
Wear abrasive materials, jewelry or shoes that rub against your tattoo
Other people touching your tattoo with unclean hands
Sharing unsanitized equipment and tools
